The Krause Challenge launched in 1998 when W.A. Krause, founder and chairman of Kum & Go, announced a one-time gift of $400,000 to be divided equally among the University of Northern Iowa, Drake University, Iowa State University and the University of Iowa for finance students to gain real world investment experience. The finance class or club at each university studies the stock market and invested the initial donation in the stock market. In each successive year, the classes re-invest the money which may have experienced growth or loss depending on the performance of their stocks. The four universities compete to see which delivers the highest return. The only guideline given is that at least ten percent of the investments are secured with Iowa-based companies.
At least ten percent of investments must be made in Iowa-based companies. University teams must submit their investment portfolio to the Krause Challenge Coordinator each month. The portfolios will be posted on the Krause Challenge web site for schools to review and judge their competition's status.
